Housed in a 16th century Benedictine abbey, the Abbazia San Pietro in Valle is situated in forested countryside around the River Nera in Umbria. Its unspoilt structure contains the Church of San Pietro in Valle, an Italian national monument containing 13th century frescoes and Roman sarcophagi. The 21 guestrooms feature original terracotta floors, stone walls and beamed ceilings, and all include modern amenities such as direct-dial telephones, satellite television, safe boxes, hair dryers and minibars. Breakfast can be taken in the ancient refectory or outside under the gothic arches of the cloister, after which guests can browse the souvenir shop, surf the Internet, play billiards or relax in the reading room. The abbey's main body houses the restaurant Il Cantico, where guests can sample Umbrian cuisine while candlelight illuminates original stone walls. The hotel's garden overlooks a valley and offers stunning panoramas of the surrounding countryside, which can be explored with maps available from reception. Guided trekking and mountain bikes are also available, as are packed lunches to sustain guests on excursions. Fishing, swimming, canoeing and rafting are all accessible within 10 kilometres of the hotel. The summer months see an array of organised activities on offer, including painting and cookery courses, wine and oil tastings, concerts in the cloister or church and medieval banquets. The hotel also has its own sauna and treatment rooms, where guests can receive a massage, and there is an intimate bar tucked away under the arches of the cloister yard. There is ample parking beneath the shade of olive trees, and a free shuttle bus runs to the nearby village of Ferentillo. The famed medieval village of Spoleto is 17 kilometres away, with the Marmore Waterfalls, Europe's highest, 15 kilometres from the hotel. Rome Fiumicino Airport is 120 kilometres away, with a driving time of two hours.
